Nova Scotia's New eWaste Program

As part of our weekly pre-move packing effort I just dropped off two old computers and a big CRT TV with wonky color that I've had lying around for years at a depot. As of February 1 you can no longer throw out such electronics in your regular trash in Nova Scotia and depots have been set up where you can drop them off instead for recycling. Cost of the program covered by a tax on all new electronics. Extremely convenient, and the kind of thing that makes me slightly more proud to live where I do.

I think it's a great idea to

I think it's a great idea to have these programs in place and I usually don't have a problem with some fees but these fees are set by the Electronic Product Stewardship Canada, which represents 22 manufacturers, including Sony, Dell and Apple. They set the fees as they see fit, they take the metals (and whatever else they want) to re-use in their products, or sell, or something else that will make them money. It seems like we are subsidizing Sony, Dell, Apple and 19 other manufacturers, doesn't it?
